On Friday 15 March, the arbitration centre hosted the German Scottish Lawyers and Business Association Symposium 2013, where Sir David Edward QC, Honorary President of the Scottish Arbitration Centre, described the benefits of Scottish arbitration under the Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010 Andrew Mackenzie, chief executive of the centre, said: “We were delighted to host the German Scottish Lawyers and Business Association Symposium 2013, especially given its interest in alternative dispute resolution." The event commenced with Matthias W. Kroll, chairman of the association, introducing Verena Gräfin von Roedern, the German Consul General in Edinburgh, who addressed the delegates. The first session focused on dispute resolution. Oliver Korte, chairman of the Hamburg Arbitration Circle, set out the position in Germany, and Sir David Edward, QC responded with the position in Scotland and noted the benefits of the recent modernisation of Scottish arbitration.
The second session covered corporate law in Scotland and Germany, with speakers Klaas Borchert and John di Paola providing presentations from their respective jurisdictions. The second part of the symposium was based at the Scottish Parliament, where discussions included the political system in Scotland the German-Scottish economic and trade relationship
